The Kangaroo and You: Everything you need to know before visiting Australia

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

After 6 perfect months in Australia, I got back home… and started missing it right away! I had the best time ever. Every country in Australia is prettier than the next and everyone I met were so kind. For those of you who are interested, check out these important tips:

1. Visa: Unless you are from New-Zealnad, you’ll have to apply for a visa. This site will help you with the arrangements: visa for Australia.

2. Customs: Customs won’t let you pollute Australia with fresh food and agricultural products. You see, Australia is divided from the rest of the world, so introducing our agricultural diseases into its eco system can unbalance it altogether. To avoid conflicts, be familiar with Australia’s guidelines.

3. Weather: Another one of Australia’s (many) oddities is the weather. When I arrived, spring was all around me. It was Spetember. Well, obviously, Australia is located in the southern hemisphere (below the equator), so the seasons are different. Pack your clothes accordingly.

4. Traffic: Australians drive on the left hand side of the road. Which, if you come from the US (like me), can be difficult. Take it into account if you plan to drive in Australia. You will adapt, but you have to be extra careful. But you know what’s the funniest part? I had to adjust to driving on the right side when I got back home!

5. Hitchhiking is illegal!|Hitchhiking is not recommended. Having a car, I didn’t have to hitchhike, but I still saw the signs forbidding it. Some people do it and tell you that it’s not a problem, but the Australian government doesn’t like it.

6. Work and travel: Ausralia is not the most expensive place in the world, but some people find it too expensive for them. Working while you travel can fix you up with some extra cash. I did it in Sydney, and it paid off big time. If you’re planning working in Australia, check out this site: work in Australia.

7. Studying in Australia: I met a few friends who were attending university in Australia. Not bad, isn’t it? I’m considering doing it myself. If you’re interested, check this out: Studying in Australia.

8. International Students card: Read carefully, you get to learn from my mistakes. I didn’t know I can issue an international student card. And so couldn’t get discounts in hotels, restaurants and museums. Any student in any university can issue an international card.

9. See Tasmania: You hear much talk about Sydney, treks to Ayres Rock and diving in the Great Barrier Reef. But I enjoyed Tasmania best. The place is a bit less traveled and full of magic. Nothing like the beaches of Bay of Fires… I heartily recommend seeing Tasmania.

So… what are you waiting for? Start packing!
